Shutting down x?

Im trying to install my nvidia drivers and when i execute it it says i have to shutdown x? wtf is it? and hwo do i shut it down

What it is: it's what lets you use Linux with a rodent and
windows and all that. To update it it needs to be closed.

As for the how:
That will commonly depend on your distro. In Slack I'd
suggest an "init 2" entered as root in a console.
