Shutting Down The Computer

I use Mandrake 9.1. And every time I shut down my computer, at the end of the messages, it always says that : "Code : Bad EIP Value", or something else, and I must turn off the computer by press the button power from the computer case. Any idea?

whansard 03-03-2004 07:55 PM

try modprobe apm
before shutting down.

EIP is extended instruction pointer i think. but that doesn't do you any good.

marvelous 03-03-2004 07:57 PM

modprobe apm? what is that?sorry, I am a new user in Linux. Thanks for your reply.

whansard 03-03-2004 08:20 PM

a command to run as root.
apm is a power management kernel module.
modprobe tries to load a module.
a lot of times when linux will not shut down correctly, the apm module is not loaded.

I've entered the command "modprobe apm" in a Root Console , but it says "modprobe : Can't locate module apm" any idea?

Upgrading

Try upgrading to 9.2 because it has a lot of fixes. http://www.linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=29 . Download i586.

Should I use apm on a desktop?

I have similar problem.
In both Mandrake 9.2 (lilo) and 10 Community (grub), when I shut down I see the entire shutdown sequence ending with

Halting System.
Power down_

and then it just stops.
The computer remains on, doing nothing.

It is an Asus P4P800 Deluxe motherboard.

So does the advice given here about APM still apply?

I was about to install APM, but then I stopped where it said this module is for laptops.

I wonder if there is some bios setting that I need to change.
Any thoughts?

Thanks,

O

apm does a lot of stuff. shutting down is one of them. some computers will not power off without the apm module, some will.

marvelous-i would have thought the apm module was included with any distribution. did you compile your own kernel?

soloist 03-11-2004 09:34 PM

no APM support in kernel

Thanks for that information. I installed APM package, but when I ran APM it reported: no APM support in kernel.

I'm running the SMP kernel version from Mandrake 10 community.

There is an "ACPI" flag in the bios, should I toggle that?

I think it is included in the kernel that ships with most distributions, but for example with my AMD (athlon xp 1800) it doesn't work even if apm module is loaded (after <shutdown -h> I still have to turn off the computer manually), with my other pc (an intel pentium 233 mhz) apm worked immediately after install.

I've been looking for a solution when I was running Suse 8.0 but never found one. So I learned to live with it  but it hurts... pushing that stupid power-off button each time

no, I don't compile the kernel. by the way, When I use AMD Athlon XP1700+ , with IWILL XP333 motherboard, and RedHat 9.0 as OS , it have the same problem that I have to shutdown the computer manually with push the button. Now, my CPU is getting burned :( , and now it is Duron 1G, with the same motherboard, and Mandrake 9.1 as OS, and the old problem is still the same. By the way, I plan to try Fedora Core.

I fixed my shutdown problem by enabling APCI in the Mandrake Control Center. Thanks to all for suggestions.

Mandrake 10 Shutdown

I realize this thread is aging but, it is still VERY relevant. I thought I'd add one more tid-bit to Soloist's solution that some other "Fresh Out-O-The-Box" Newbie such as myself might find useful.

Enabling JUST ACPI did not help my beat-up HP but, enabling both ACPI and Force No APIC did the trick!

Both actions can be enabled/disabled in the Mandrake Control Center.

This is my first experience with LINUX and I will attest... I'm impressed. The Mandrake distribution is Slick! One last... Finding much need information (HELP) is easier to find Here than on Mandrake's site. Thanks!

poweroff

In fedora core 2, it works (either in gnome or with fluxbox) to simply open a terminal window and enter the command "poweroff". It shuts everything down, halts the system, and shuts off the power.
