What I want to be able to do is get a shutdown/restart button that has a graphical confirmation and shuts down (and powers off) the computer cleanly. Is there any way to write some sort of shell script (or other) that will access GDM's own shutdown sequence? As well as shutting down KDE cleanly to begin with?
Like I said, I know I could just switch to KDM, but I like all the themes associated with GDM, a lot of which are not compatible with even the latest KDM (which, correct me if I'm wrong, hasn't been released in a stable version of KDE yet, has it?) due to single-prompt username/password login screens.
So, how do I use GDM, but shutdown cleanly directly from KDE?
I'm assuming that you have an issue with the fact that the option to "shut down" is not presented to you when you log out of KDE when using GDM the way it does when using KDE with KDM.
I only ask this because you said you could not shut down "cleanly" and I wanted to be sure you were still getting back to GDM when you logged out of KDE and were able to shut down cleanly from there. If not, that is an entirely different matter.
