shutdown lost

Hi there! Something mysterious has happened by accident: lost my shutdown icon and also the ability to function through ctrl+alt+del shutdown in fc9!
how to fix it? i wouldn't like to re-assemble the whole fedora package because i have also win 2003 server and XP (for my wife) in the same pc...
i can stop the thing while working in linux through halt, init 0 etc. 'tricks' but it seems quite idiotical (so am i right now)... anyway thanks for possible answer/advices, wjuhis

Sorry, I am not sure what you mean by fc 9. I would have guessed Fedora 9, but thats not out yet...

If you are running GNOME, right click on one of the panels (the bars at the top and bottom) and choose "Add to Panel." Scroll down and find "Quit" with a power icon and drag it onto one of the panels. That should fix the problem.

Also lost the whole 'button' so actully i'm asking where to find the function /var/log...
and by the way: thanks for an utmost quick reply, wjuhis

sorry forgot: yes i do mean fedora 9 and gnome... and well and i'm kind of a newbie but on the branch from 1972 (not linux, naturally) but several other operating systems are quite 'familiar' also designed one for a microcontroller...now while waiting for my retirement days (10 years to go) instead of working in the industry i'm lecturing (pre college level) and a great admirer of mr. linux (linus, a finn as i)... i do have three servers working under fedora 9 and one under 2003 win... but i prefer linux because its a lightyear more straight forward than 2003 win... both have there sides, though... wjuhis (again), and thank you again...

Ok. I understand what you mean... I don't really know where to find the shutdown program. Can you still shutdown through the System menu?

chrism01 01-05-2008 08:12 PM

Well, on FC6 it's
/sbin/shutdown (from the cmd line)
so I guess you could create a new icon and attach that cmd to it ?

thank you VERY much for your help... anyway my system seems to be working but is still corrupt... so a very UNORTHODOX solution (and contemporary) new icon and command halt -p and it works... when i have time i do have to re-install the whole system with all the possible updates... have a nice week and thanks again for givin me good ideas... ps. EVEN shutdown doesn't work, wjuhis

Have you tried (in a console such as Konsole) entering the command
Code:

shutdown now
? Works for me, anyway. :)
