Restart hangs in SLES8, 9

Hello,

A few days ago I built a brand new machine for Linux/Oracle use. Since I will only use it for personal testing I went low-lowend with the hardware. MSI 651M-V motherboard, Twinmos memory, a Seagate disk and a 2,4Ghz celeron CPU.

On this I installed SuSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 8. Except for the unknown graphic card everything went ok during the install. The system also seemed to work ok.

BUT!! When trying to either shutdown or restart the system, it hangs instead of doing what it's supposed to. For restart it comes to 'Please stand by while rebooting the system'. The cursor blinks a few times and then the system locks up and power off is the only exit. And since this happends after syslogd stopped, I get nothing in the syslog (log ends with the standard exit code 15)

I tried to run in failsafe mode without acpi and even to disable it in bios, but with no luck. Bios to default and then failsafe mode. Same problem. Installed SLES9 to see if it was related to SLES8, but the same thing happens.

Any ideas? How can I hunt down the problem? Is it a known issue (I found several notes about related problems, but nothing that helped me)? The 651M-V isn't supported for Linux by the Manufactorer. Is that it?

I'll go on by trying other dists and even Windows, but I'd really like to get things running with SLES, since it's supported by Oracle and I don't have RedHat AS.

Regards,
/Y

EDIT: I just noted that under SLES9 shutdown -h is actually working. I thought I tested that, but I guess that I only did it under SLES8. -r still hangs though.
