Shut down error log location

When I'm shutting down I get an error message that I would like to take a closer look at, but how? It seems that nearly every event is logged, such as the boot activity, etc.

Is there something similar to dmesg but instead of the boot up log, it displays a log of what happens when it shuts down?

Just look through the varied files in /var/log, things
like syslog, debug, messages ...

Cheers,
