Should I install all level 3 upgrades?

So far have installed all levels 1 and 2 but am not too sure about level 3. I know there is a description for each one but I am still not sure. Any advice appreciated.

level 3? What's that??

maggie32 01-07-2011 04:26 AM

I am using linux "julia" and the update manager says there are 25 recommended updates clicking on the icon brings them all up and the grade in the left column is 3.

julia?? what's that?? Do you mean Mint 10? That appears to be code named Julia. If you want to apply them, then do so, it's your call really.

Maggie,

look over the box that appears in about the middle of the screen when you boot
linuxMint. Look over the links there. Its recommended that users install level 1 and 2, as you have been doing. Some users report simply installing all up dates, all the time with no problems resulting.

I used to install only 1 & 2 and I would look over 3. As you already know, doing that is
practical only if you do not have much of a life outside of using, maintaining, & tweeking your computer. My guess is that like me and 99% of other computer users your interest in computers is to use them and then live your life, pursue your interests. So, the simple answer is yes, go ahead and include level 3 updates. Its safe and it will not clog up your drive so long as you have 15 to 20GB drive space dedicated to LinuxMint.

4 & 5 you want to be selective about, only install after you look them over, need them and believe they are not buggy.

The LinuxMint Forum is the best place for LinuxMint specific questions. I'd seek answers there first.

i think that if you want to spend the time googling and waiting for answers on forums if something goes wrong , go for it!

usually , updates are a good thing , but if i would take the decision, i would only install level 1 .

Thanks for all your comments and help. I think I will probably stick to 1 and 2's.

Maggie,

I strongly recommend you take a look at the linuxmint community forum. You do not
need to ask about each level 3 update. I can tell you that neither I or
anyone at the form has reported a hangup caused by installing any level 3 and
above update.

In fact, many users report installing all updates with no negative consequences.
I stop at level three because I used to do that in Linuxmint8.5 and 9. Two months
ago I ended up with repeated bug report popup boxes, asking me to submit a bug
report. I reinstalled LM9 and did only level 1,2, & 3 updates and have
done so since with no problems. I am not even certain an update caused my
problem. Forum users do not think so based on their experience. I just
cut it off at 3 to play it safe.
