Should I compile a new kernel on my picturebook

I bought a pciturebook and I want to put linux on it. I will need new drivers for the camera and the jogdial. Do I need to recompile my kernel when I get these new drivers and how do I do that. I looked at the newbie guide to recompiling the kernel and it seemed to me that was a guide if you were upgrading your kernel version. So any 733t person who could help my sorry n00b arse out, please do.

Ok I have decided that I will simply upgrade the kernel to 2.6 but is that smart will it ruin how linux interacts with my computer. I am using vector linux that works with 2.4.2. So now the question is, how safe is it for me to upgrade to 2.6 because it comes with the proper drivers for everything in my laptop.

thanks
