Should I clean up the residues of failed installations ?
 

As a shiroto or newbie (Distro: Suse 9.2), I am optimistic, and I made some trials of installing MPlayer. Firstly I tried to compile from source; I failed. Then, I downloaded an rpm package and tried again, and I failed again. I wonder if the accumulated material (codecs, drivers and so on), perhaps redundant, will prevent things of going better the next time. The listing yielded by #locate mplayer is frightening (!) and I wonder if I should visit every directory and remove thigs (which ones ?).

May be, this is a very elemental question; but the problem for newbies is not precisely the lack of available information, but just the excess of it, and I confess that I feel a little lost in the HOWTO's and manuals galore!. This is the reason why I would appreciate a simple piece of advice on this subject.

Mplayer may be a pain to install sometimes :-)
you may wanna have a look at this site

It describes all the dependencies associated with it (use YaST to figure out which you're violating).
I'd also advice you to add packman's site to the sources of installation list (as well as SUSE's ftp if you haven't already done so). Installing softwares using YaST becomes then a simple search and click process.
