should have left the laptop at work...

Here is my problem. I was setting up my Gentoo install on my laptop at work. While I’m in the middle of compiling my kernel it turns 5 o’clock. I grabbed the old laptop and went out the door. Homeward bound.

When I got home, I plugged my laptop into my network. No internet… “bummer” I think to myself after hours of compiling (not the first time, but hey it is my first gentoo install). The compile needed that connection… why oh why did I not just do a “fechonly” I think that if I had, than my life would not totally stuck, i mean suck… I digress.

I read about commands in Linux to renew the DHCP , but I do not have the luxury of a fully operational operation system. dhclient and other basic commands do not work. I tried to chroot back to the liveCD, but…well lets just leave it at I could not do it. Could someone tell me how to get my connection to the internet up and running again? rebooting will not do it... i think.

If the system is still on, exit would have taken you back to the live cd. Then you could likely do an ifconfig eth0 down and dhcpcd eth0 to renew the IP, copy the /etc/resolv.conf over to the chroot environment, chroot and start where you left off.

If you shut off the system, boot the live CD, do the same and continue where you left off. Whatever the last successful step was.
