Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

I have Linux Kubuntu 10.04lts installed on a desktop of mine. For some reason when I rename something on my desktop like a "shortcut"...the icon disappears. I go to my main menu in the bottom right corner and when I come to an application I want on the desktop, I right click and hit "add to desktop". Once its on the desktop I try to rename it but the icon disappears and is replaced with a question mark, the shortcut is still there but I want the original icon so it doesn't look ugly. Any idea what the problem is?...am I doing it right?
Right click on the icon. You will get a pop-up menu. Click on Properties. In the screen that comes up, type in the name you want in the text box. Left click on the icon button on the left, and select the icon image you want to see.
So KDE 4 is just buggy and crappy? I mean I have no problem with gnome, but I just think KDE looks better simply. Oh well though no big deal, but I still would like to rename my icons/icon pictures. I can't find anything on the net.
