Short battery life running Manjaro
Hi everyone,
Just a quick question, is it usual for battery life to be significantly shorter on a notebook after installing a Linux distro as standalone? I would rather give birth to a chair than use Windows 8, but I must admit an hour of battery life (down from 3) does seem like a bit of a hit. This is even after installing and setting up Powertop. I've read around that this is common. Just making sure. Cheers, Beaux. |
Like any interface it will depend on the sort of things you have running and whether or not they are optimized for the system you are running.

If your computer has Optimus switchable graphics, then that will definitely taking its toll on your battery consumption. Optimus is not supported by Nvidia under Gnu/Linux. there is a project called Bumblebee which focuses on making Optimus workable on Gnu/Linux. I've never used it my self, but to my understanding, it isn't able to make it fully workable, but instead makes it possible to choose which graphics you want to use.
