ctrl+alt+f2
you can get a different console f3 to f6

You get back to the GUI by pressing
ctrl+alt+f7

Or you can open an X-Terminal. It will be in your menu.

A distro would be beneficial
As darthtux suggested, you can switch virtual consoles
- or -
If you using KDE, follow these steps:
"K" button -> System -> Terminals -> Konsole
There's your "command prompt"

If you use Gnome. Right click on desktop and click "Open Terminal". Now, command away :) Everything but "su" :p
