shell scripting-.bash_profile empty

Hey, I was learning how to write shell scripts today and came back to my computer later on and found that the .bash_profile and .bashrc files are empty. However, the functions and aliases that I had set there earlier are still working. Another thing, I now have a directory in my home directory that I didnt put there, called "lost+found". I cannot gain access to it so therefore have no idea whats in it. Its locked and I cannot get to it using Root (I figured I could maybe get to locked things of this sort using root, but I really have no idea).

One more question, I dont know how to shut down my computer under lynx. The farthest I have gotten is logging out of kde and then logging out of the user but after that I dont know, and have to do an unclean shutdown. This is beginning to mess with my system.

something wierd

Now this is strange. I just went and looked at the .bash_profile and all the scripting is now there. I know it wasnt like I was just looking at the wrong file cause earlier today i wrote a function called open_profile that would open the file for me in an editor, and that is exactly what I used to open it.

The file is empty and then its not, go figure that one! I swear im not crazy!

Im still curious to this and still need to know how to get access to that "lost+found" file. Thanks
