Shell prompt - dunno how to exit


hello,
im very new to linux, i only just installed it the other day, and today i loaded half life and was configuring it, when the game was not responding so i pressed ctrl alt and f1 i think it was and it brang up a black screen that is called shell prompt i think. anyway i dunno how to exit it, when i type exit it asks me to login. Ive restarted my comp many times and have no idea how to exit. Help would be appreciated thx

Try typing
init 5
- hopefully, you should go to runlevel 5, which, presumably, is where you want to go.

I'm not sure of your situation exactly, but if you got out of your GUI with a ctrl-alt-fn, then you can get back to the GUI with ctrl-alt-f7.

well, asuming that you didn't change too much and that you pressed that in x server alt F7 should also bring you back to x sever (i think). O and also try typing startx. If for some reason x server is closed you should get a message saying "x server is already started" or somthing like that. If that's the case alt F2 should work.
