Shares in XP and linux
Hi
Could someone please help a want to be able to setup access to my shared files, folders, and printers in RH8 from Wondoze XP. Do I have to setup samba or is there an other way way to do it. Cheers:newbie: |
You can access WINDOWS from linux, but with windows its much harder if not at all possible to access a linux partition. Linux gives the window partition a filename/devicename, like /dev/hda1. Since windows uses letter : \ for devices, i don't think you can access linux from it.

You can using Samba. I don't have the link but there's some great literature on how to use samba in tricking windows into thinking it's reading a windows drive.

If you formatted your XP-disks in NTFS you first have to make sure that your kernel supports that format, it still is not possible to write to a ntfs-partition. As said above it is even more difficult to access your linux partition from Windows. If you really want to be able to share directories and disks, your best option is to run a server running under Linux with Samba on it. In tjis way you can access it under Linux and XP. When you mount the server trough NFS under Linux. You can't telle teh difference from your normal ~/home/foo-map.

Hi
I was mainly talking about accessing shares over the network from XP to Linux and vice versa. Thanks:newbie: |
