sftp custom kernel to another machine?

can i build a kernel on a workstation and then transfer the files listed in the grub.conf to a remote server and have the kernel work? 'make oldconfig' is a pain, i'd like to use the graphical 'make menuconfig' but X is not installed on my remote server.

if the machines are identical then yes you can, but "make menuconfig" doesn't need X, in the 2.6 branch that's "make gconfig" and "make xconfig". note that you would also need to copy all kernel modules you need as well as just jue bzimage.
