setup VLC to play dvd's

Hellow.

I get an error message when I try to play a dvd in VLC.
Playback failure:
DVDRead could not open the disc "/dev/sr0".
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///dev/sr0'. Check the log for details.

What should I do?

a few things
you might want to read the guide on posting questions
you did not include any of the other needed information

1)
what is the operating system ?
2)
what version of that OS is this
3)
how was vlc installed ?
source or package manager

4)
what Version of VLC is this ?
0.? 1.0 or the current vlc2 ????

5)
is libdvdnav and libdvdcss installed
( the os and how vlc was installed will supply this)

6)
what is this DVD ????
a store bought one ?
one you made ?
one from a different country and using a different country code ?

Just to make sure, is this any DVD or just a particular one?

when you open the dialog to "play from dvd"
media / open disk

double check that the dvd check box is checked and not blue ray or Audio CD

in the location box at he end of dev/sr0
is a down arrow

click it and select
/dev/dvd

if that dose not do it
run VLC from the terminal

the ERRORS will be printed

you did install the codecs for vlc ? right

Hi...

First, see if the option in post three here works. If it doesn't, then try the options here, besides Medibuntu. Ignore that one, the repository no longer exists.

Regards...

hi ardvark71 I tried the first post you suggested, didn't work, tried the second and got this

randy@randy:~$ sudo ln -s /dev/sr0 /dev/dvd
[sudo] password for randy:
ln: failed to create symbolic link /dev/dvd: File exists

Do you have any idea what I should do.

I'm wondering at this point if I should just uninstall VLC and try to re install it.
or if there is another media player I can install that will work for the computer ignorant.

Smplayer plays "store bought" dvd's
but YOU have to manually install other things

BUT
the dvd interactive menu is "experimental" and TURNED OFF by default

when you pop the dvd into the drive and push the close button ON the computer
a few seconds later a menu pop up SHOULD pop up on your desktop asking WHAT you want to do
open it with ? something
navigate it with your file manager
gnome - Nautilus
KDE - dolphin

Hi...

What all did you do? Did you only try creating the symlink or did you also try any of the other options? Please be detailed.

As far as another player, you could try Fluendo OnePlay. Although it does cost a little bit of money, you shouldn't have any problem with codecs.

Regards...

In answer to your questions.

I am using the dvd layer that is in my laptop.

When I put a dvd in nothing happens.

Also I uninstalled VLC and re-installed via the terminal. The version is 2.1.6

I was wondering about the drives for my dvd player, so I went to discs and tried to eject the disc and it did eject.

The only thing I can think of there is something missing because I am using lubuntu and not ubuntu.

any thoughts?

So we can rule out the obvious things, does the dvd play in other players?

2nd, does anything load through the drive on the laptop? Another dvd? CD? Just ruling out things ....
