Setup Samba
 

Hi to everyone,
I installed Samba but don't know how to make it work. I enable the services also for smb and all related smb daemon. Can someone guide me through it? I'd like to share files and print within my windows network.

Guide.. hmm.. maybe you should start off with some reading at www.samba.org and then ask more specific details. There are also some great howto's and such at www.tldp.org

This keeps us from rewriting howto's and novels on this site when the info is readily available. But were more than willing to help out when you run into more specific problems or questions you may have.

I looked on tlpd.com and I couldn't find any howtos on samba only setting up a gateway

Your telling me www.samba.org has no documentation on their site? Last time I looked it did.. hmmm... ;)

These guys are correct. There is a wealth of information out there. However, to answer your question (in brief). You don't say which distro you have but I can only speak about RH9 (at least for now anyway). Getting Samba to work can be easy and expand to very complex depending on the security you desire. First, you must have a directory that you wish to share with others. Once that directory exists, then you have the users that you want to share it with. Then you have to edit a file called smb.conf to make it all happen. The users must be a valid user on the machine running samba and must be entered into a file called smbusers. This file lists the Linux user name and the windoze user name and equates them so Linux can validate the two. The file called smb.conf list the files name and the authorized users to access that file. I don't know how you do things on your machine but these manipulations can be done from either the CLI or X. After making any changes to the above files you must always restart smb services in order to activate the change. I have found that it is much easier to do much of this from X. You will have to look for the area called "servers" and click on the one called Samba. That should bring up a configuration window. It does have a help and there are man pages for this. You can also use SWAT which is a http interface into the configuration, but I haven't talked to many that have made it work. Usually has to do with the connection being refused. That is it in a nutshell. I would definitely obtain a manual or download as much of the documentation from the websites as possible. O'Reilly press makes an excellent book simply called "Samba". It leads you through step by step on setting up the config files. I hope that helps a little bit. Look at the docs and man pages, give it a shot, and repost with questions. Good Luck and have fun!
