Unhappy Setup Issue

Alright, I'm not ashamed to say I'm brand new to Linux and am making it my new "hobby" to learn it. Any and all help here is more than appreciated, I assure you.

I seem to have come across my first issue in the first 10 seconds of the setup process...

I'm trying to install Linux Mandrake 7.0 (Secure Server Edition) onto my machine as a secondary OS. I've set aside a seperate partition for it to use. During the bootup setup the first thing it does (If you didn't opt to type in "expert") is go through and check out your hardware configuration. When it goes through this it always ... stops... when it gets to checks IRQ 14. It just freezes the entire machine. I'm not sure why and I haven't been able to curb this problem yet. I tried using the expert setup (which was the advise it gave for dealing with the possible but unlikely hardware problem).

Has anybody seen this problem before or have an idea what's causing it?

Thank you much. Let me know if you need more information. I'm brand new to Linux.

What are the specs of the computer, what PCI cards do you have installed?

Just on a side note, if you are able download a more modern distribution then do so, maybe the current release of Mandrake, using Mandrake 7 is the equivalent of using Win95

I'll also look into upgrading my Linux Software. 7.0 is all I have on CD. What do you recommend as far as a free downloadable Linux platform?

Everything seems OK there to me, you might like to see what happens without the modem plugged in. It may just be that Mandrake 7.0 is just too old for your modern system

As far as distributions go, I don't know whatever you want - go to the different sites and read about them and then pick one that takes your fancy - SuSE, Mandriva (formely Mandrake), Fedora Core, Mepis, Ubuntu, Kubuntu are some of the more popular ones with beginners. The installers should automatically configure the software for your computer and hold your hand whilst setting it up.

I downloaded Ubuntu just the other day and have been very impressed with it - I threw it into an older computer that I need, but don't actually spend that much time using so couldn't justify spending the time setting up slackware on it which is what my main system runs.
