Setting up wireless - please help!
Hi,
For two days now I've been trying to install wireless into SuSE 9.2 but with no results! The PCI card installed is a belkin f5d7000 using the ralink rt2500 chipset, SuSEplugger has detected it but YaST hasn't. I heard that you can use ndiswrapper (I installed 0.10 with my installation) on most cards, however I have no idea how to use ndiswrapper, me being an absolute newbie. Thanks in advance. :Pengy: |
Have you tried consulting the README file, Searching the Wireless Networking archives, or Googling ndiswrapper?
|
Yes, actually just a moment ago I just found the sourceforge support page, thanks! :Pengy:
|
Let us know how you do!
|
Check that page too:
http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/mediawiki It has a lot of info. First of all you should check if your card is supported by ndiswrapper in: http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/m...index.php/List |
hmmmmm
I have a slight problem ndiswrapper when I tried said some thing along the line of ( I could not copy exact text as only my windows installation has internet) cp cannot stat ? I tried seeing if it had installed it and it said it had but the hardware was not present-I tried uninstalling and reinstalling again and again but to no success, help!
:study: |
Probably you have the wrong Window$ driver.
Check the card list in http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/mediawiki usually they link to the correct drivers to download. |
my card isn't shown the list, should I just try one with the same chipset? Perhaps I could use the drivers on my computer?
:Pengy: |
So from where did you get the window$ driver?
|
I chose one the ROLINE RWA-54 W-LAN 54 PCI Adapter (this uses the same chip) which was on the list, me assuming it would be similar, but obviously does not have to much incommon with the belkin f5d7000!
:o |
i tried to do the lspci command but bash said command not found, do I need to install something, or is there something wrong with my installation?
|
Take a look at that:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/sh...cat=128&page=1 And if you still cannot configure it, then get back here. |
hi again, followed instruction from here The card now works however it cannot detect the linksys router. It probably just a tweak or something, any idea? Thanks
:Pengy: |
try that:
iwlist wlan0 scan It should list all the access points that are in your range. Check that link: http://linuxcommand.org/man_pages/iwlist8.html |
here are the results!
linux:/home/ivan#iwlist wlan0 scan wlan0 scan complete cell 01: Address: 00:0F:66:59:5E:2A ESSID:"linksys" protocol: IEEE 802.11b Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462GHZ (channel 11) Quality 0/100 signal level:- 59dbm Noise level:- 256dbm Encryption key: off Bit rate: 1 Mb/s Bit rate: 2 Mb/s Bit rate: 5.5 Mb/s Bit rate: 11 Mb/s Bit rate: 6 Mb/s Bit rate: 9 Mb/s Bit rate: 12 Mb/s Bit rate: 12 Mb/s Bit rate: 18 Mb/s Bit rate: 24 Mb/s Bit rate: 36 Mb/s Bit rate: 48 Mb/s Bit rate: 54 Mb/s Extra: bcm_int=100 it seems to detect the router, so what gone wrong!?! note when I typed the ndiswrapper -l it showed the rt2500 driver installed but it also said hardware present, fuzzy. Also Kwi-fi shows the card working but when I scan kwi-fi cannot find any networks. Thanks |
It is correct what ndiswrapper -l displays ... It should display driver installed and hardware present.
Now you almost have it since you can find your router. Check that page for the Final Adjustments to the wlan0 Configuration File: http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/m...ofessional_9.2 |
Still not working , the card now seems to connected up, the configuration of the device made no difference, any ideas? One thing though how do I find out my 'Internet Service Provider's Domain Name Server IP addresses'? Thanks
|
With what I can help is until you can ping your access point.
Open a console and do a ping to your router. >ping IP_of_the_router For the DNS, you should call your ISP or do a google search. |
just tried to ping the router but it claims it cannot connect with the network. I have phoned up my isp ( bt broadband ) and they claim I did not need a DNS address, I told the person I had linux but was hung up on.Would my router be able to tell me as I can (in window$) connect to the firmware
|
First of all you need to configure your internal network then you should worry about DNS.
You should be able to ping the router ... I donīt know about Suse how to configure the network interface ... if you had Debian I could help you with that ... Can anyone help with the Suse network interface configuration? |
have been a tinkerin' with my network card etc. and have finally got it to work I can ping the router and everything, one thing is still bothering me, how can I change the intervals when it updates the ip address? Thanks Penguin Tech
|
Which IP address are you talking about?
- Your internal network IP? --> You have to check your router configuration and change it from DHCP (dynamic) to static. - Your external IP (the IP as your machine is seen by the outside world)? --> This depends on your Internet Service Provider if they gave you a static or a dynamic IP. |
I would check the Routers admin menu too see if an ip was given to your wireless card.
Im pretty sure you have to also setup an ssid for your card to use with the router. Its been so long from since i last used a wireless card with Ndiswrapper with linux (RedHat 8 I think) There should be away to set eth0 or eth1 (whichever is your wireless card) and assign it a ssid. |
Fedora Core I & Wireless problems
Currently I have just started to get into Linux. Fedora Core 1 I thought was a good place to start. I am trying to install the F5D7000 Belkin wireless router and have had no luck. I installed ndiswrapper1.2 and was unable to use the OEM drivers. Anyone got any words of wisdom or instructions for this baby to linux?
