Please open a terminal. (I believe Applications->Accessories->Terminal in Ubuntu), enter the following commands and post the output of each.
Code:
lspci -vnn
lsmod
Also do you have a wired connection? It will make getting the wireless going much easier if so.

I have Ubuntu on a secondary computer and the wireless just worked. You need to get some information about your wireless to post here to get more detailed help for your specific card. Take a look at this link at Ubuntu:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WiFiHowTo

You might also try using the search function here at LQ. Are you trying to use Ubuntus Network manager?

OK--Broadcom wireless. I don't know all the details for Broadcom, but try iwconfig to see if there is a wireless device associated (typically wlan0). If so, then try :
iwlist wlan0 scan

OK---it needs a driver or firmware. Do some searches here and on Google. there's lots of traffic on Broadcom wireless. Also try their website---at one time they were not Linux-friendly, but they may have seen the light.

Ah cool thanks I guess that's one step closer to having wireless! How do I know which driver I require? Is there a chance that I won't be able to use wireless in Ubuntu?

Thank you for your help!

The version of the broadcom card you have is only supported by the linux b43 driver starting with kernel 2.6.32, which Ubuntu 9.10 (if that is the version you're running) does not use.

You need the Broadcom wl driver. You should be able to install this through Ubuntu's Hardware Manager, somewhere in the system/admin settings.

Or do
Code:
sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source

I'm really sorry for my noobishness but what is a kernel 2.6.32? This finally sounds like I'm getting some where

Thanks!

The version number of software is a way of noting the number of releases.

So the linux kernel version 0.01 was released in Sept of 1991, Oct of 1991 saw the release of version 0.02 and on and on until today, kernel version 2.6.33 will be released soon.
