setting up WInXP printer 20seconds, Linux 20 days? help plz

I'm a noob on Mandrake 10, tried to run through this KDE print utility, starts up and seems ok, finds my printer. Then it brings up a box saying i need a username and password. I even try root and it doesn't take it. If it won't take root or my other names then what does it want? Sigh, I'm afraid linux is going nowhere fast if it's this hard to even get a printer going. I know I know, read the documentation or I only have myself to blame -sorry, but have better things to do than spend two days confusing myself with 50pages of strange ramblings of info on how to print. -apologies am grumpy, thanks for any help..

Best way is to use the mandrake control center for his. It's in the menu under system > configuration > configure my computer... When that opens it will ask for the root password - the one you typed in during install.

Once you have that open, select hardware, then printers... It may wish to install more apps and drivers from the installation CD's and it will tell you so...

After that you should have a printer tool where you can add a new printer. It will run a wizard to help and may detect the printer or allow selection from a list...

What sort of printer by the way?

LinuxPrinting.org http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...n-Stylus_C20UX suggest using Gimp print as the driver. Have you installed Gimp print? It should be on the Mandrake CD's. Good luck
