Setting up server
 

I'm trying to set up a server (that will share the Internet connection, provide some network storage space, run a www server, etc). I installed Red Hat 7.3 with the RPMs I wanted, but didn't install KDE or GNOME. I installed Classic X window system. I don't (right now) have enough hard drive space to install either of those, and I figured it's a server, so it doesn't really need a nice GUI.

So far, I was able to turn on the telnet server, which was off by default, and get basic NAT to work (using it now, in fact). But I couldn't figure out how to alter config files from the command line (does it have something do do with "ed" or "red"?), and for most of the things I've tried to set up, I can't find help, or at least help that I can understand. The man pages can help sometimes, but sometimes I don't even know what man to look up.

how do I block ports, and how do I forward specific ports to specific private addresses? I read that you either use ipchains or iptables, and I'm using iptables...

If this machine is public Internet facing, you should seriously consider hiring someone to configure it for you.

Failing that, install Windows. A badly configured Windows machine is a lot less dangerous to the rest of the Internet than a badly configured Linux box.

That's probably true... but it's not worth it to hire someone (it's just for my personal use at home), and the machine isn't powerful enough to keep up with bloatware (Windows)... Its primary purpose will just be routing, but I also wanted to use it for those other things. I've been running some of that on my (windows) workstations, but they aren't always on, and I'd rather the load be on a computer I don't work at.
