Setting up network in Suse 9.1
 

I am new to Suse Linux and would like to setup a home network with sharing a dial up connection. I am a bit confused with the manuals and would appreciate any information. I understand I need to have masquerading on the host computer but my main problem is on the client computer what I need to do and if I need to use KInternet.

Fire up YAST2. Go to "Security and Users" > Firewall. Set your External interface as your modem interface e.g. "ppp0" Most likely it will be in the pull down. Then put as your Internal interface your ethernet interface e.g. "eth0" (This is connected to your internal switch or router). Then select the services you want to allow from the outside hit "Next" Check "Forward Traffic and do masquerading".

But reading agin looks like you go this far so what OS is this client running?

Yes I got that far and now my biggest stumbling block is what do I do on the client computer which is also running Suse 9.1.

It's pretty easy. You just have to open yast2 and "Network Devices" > "Network Card".

Give your self an IP address (same block as your setup your dialup/file server)
Put in a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 unless your using a larger IP range.
You probably already have the hostname and other info setup.

Then add a couple name servers from you ISP to /etc/resolve.conf and maybe even map the IP's to hostnames in /etc/hosts if you like.

Then try share the internet. ping yahoo or whatever. Good luck. I installed privoxy it's a web proxy server so all computers on the lan here have a more private surfing experience. You can rewrite content, headers, sendout custom OS/Browser identity, filter out bogus JS, pop-ups, ads and many more features. Look into this package if you want to try a web proxy server. (it comes packaged with SuSE).
