Question setting up mutt mail

I am trying to set up my email. How do I connect it to my service provider such that I can send and receive mail outside my own little linux network (which has only one user, me)?

I tried yesterday just sending a letter to my self at the web-based email I use, and it did not come through. I have earthlink dsl as my internet provider, and so I have an earthlink.net email address. I don't use that address at all right now; my primary address is the web-based one.

Any hints?
