Setting up multiple mail servers on one server

Another newb here,

Using Mandrake 9.2, I have a standalone machine that acts as a server. I can get it to act as a mail server but I have multiple domains I would like to provide email service to each with their own domain.

For Example:
Fictitious domains I host websites for:
- domain1.com
- domain2.com
- domain3.com

I can configure mail for domain1.com so my email address is myname@domain1.com. I would like to give a buddy, who I host domain2.com for, his own email ending in his domain (hisname@domain2.com).

I know that you can setup virtual hosts to host different website domains on the same box. Is there something similar for hosting different mail domains on the same box?

Hope I made sense,
ian

Almost all mail servers (even freeware ones for Windows) support multiple post offices. Since you didn't say which mail server software you use, I'd suggest you just take a look at the documentation provided by that particular package you use. Any more questions, though, I'll try to help you out with this. Since I host a few different sites (and domains for email as well) I'll be glad to help.

If you are using Sendmail, look into the section FEATURE(virtusertable) and remainder of that section. It gives you the info on hosting virtual domains. You would find this in the sendmail.cf file. It may be a section in the sendmail.mc file but I can't remember.

I stand corrected...

You are totally right, rootyard. The software I'm using is postfix on Mandrake 9.2.

Thanks for the replies.

Were you able to get your problem solved? If so, (if you don't mind, actually ) would you put your solution (or where it can be found) as a reply to this thread? I know, when you first start fooling with mail servers they can be a pain to make sense out of. A lot of the documentation out there for them is not so easy to understand.

Not Yet

You are right again! You must be good. I have not found dummified documentation on setting up a mail server. I also haven't found out how to set up multiple mail servers on one physical machine.

I am, however, reading stuff on the Internet because I know I'm not the first one to attempt this.

When I find the solution I'll make sure to post it here. That'll be good for newbies who google themselves here looking for the same solution.

Althought if there is someone out there that knows how to do this please tell me.

Thanks,
ian
