Setting up LDAP

Hello,
Is there any good documentation on setting up LDAP out there? I have an Ubuntu Server version 12.10 setup and am just learning about LDAP. I have 10 pc's I would like to authenticate to a server like Active Directory but this is a pure Linux environment. I'd like to go with a current technology and was told LDAP is the one to learn. I was going to go with NIS but was told it is an old out of date technology. I also heard about OpenLDAP. What is the best to use that is relevant and where can I find some documentation that can walk me through it.

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

OpenLDAP would definitely be a good choice, It's generally nice and clean and logical compared to other "enterprise" solutions like 389ds, which are powerful, but a real headf#@* to fix. Stick to docs for 2.4 and newer though, as quite a lot changed (config used to be ina standard config file, but now it's in a real proper ldif file, and there's a different synchronization mechanism (slurpd vs syncrepld). For documentation the project site itself is the best place to start.

You definitely don't want NIS / NIS+
