Setting up internet connection in Mandrake 9.1

I've installed Mandrake 9.1 on my parents' computer. The install went fine, everything is properly detected, except this one problem: I can't connect to the internet.

Before I installed, I checked with a livecd (Slack live) , and internet connection is fine with the live cd, so I know it's me who is doing something wrong and it isn't a hardware issue.

The internet connection is a cable internet connection, so it goes trough a network card (in windows, this shows up as a VIA - compatible fast ethernet adapter, in linux too, so I guess this is correct) to some sort of router/cable modem, I guess it's a sort of small LAN, when configuring the internet in windows, I have to select 'lan' in the wizard to make it work.
In the mandrake configuration centre, I follow the wizard through, but it doesn't work.

At boot, the boot process waits a really long time at 'bringing up interface eth0', then there comes a message like '
ping 1: ...
ping 2:
ping 3:
retreived ip adress'
(not the exact words, it goes too fast to write it down properly, but I think you get the idea)

When I launch a browser and try to go to a website , i get a 'server unreachable' error message, if I try to ping an adress, i get a 'network unreachable' message.

I know this is probably a small problem based on my stupidity, but please help me out.
If you need any more information, please let me know.

The modem is a Motorola surfboard.
How do you know if the ethernet card is configured properly? This could be the problem.
I'm going to boot in Linux now to write down everything.

Okay, instead of describing everything, I took screenshots of the mandrake wizard.

This is what the main screen looks like, those are the settings that were standard , after the install. (it is in dutch, translation: top says internet acces, bottom lan configuration)

Gateway is left blank, what do i have to write in it?

Lan Configuration

I get this when i click the wizard button.

Hope this is enough addition information, and sorry for the newbness.

Can you translated the text in the box to English containing "dotted-decimal"?

sorry

it says:
'configuring network device eth0 (driver via-rhine)
Please enter the IP configuration for this pc.
Every entrance must be entered as an IP adress in 'dotted decimal' form. (for example 1.2.3.4)'

Automatic IP:
IP adress:
netmask:
DHCP hostname:
remember network id (usefull for laptops):
'hot' adapting of network:
give hostname from DHCP adress:
start at boot:
'

The IP numbers look strange. Get on the machine that works with the cable modem and get the correct gateway and netmask values. You should
set the gateway address.
