setting up FTP server

Hey, Im New to linux, Not Totally new, but new, I know all of the basics (shell, tty, etc...) and im running SuSE 9.1

I was wondering how to setup a FTP server step by step.. I had ncftpd. :P

I want to know how to make a ftp server like ftp.68.110.111.111(fake ip).com, or ftp.sulfurkirby.com, and how to connect to it from a REMOTE computer.

Help would be GREATLY loved.

SuSE typically comes with vsftp and pureftp servers
Pureftp is a daemon that can be started with rcpureftp start or /etc/init.d/pureftpd start

It's config file is /etc/pureftp/pureftpd.conf and is well commented for making it annonymous only or whatever.

vsftp has a conf file usually in /etc/vsftp/vsftpd.conf It however is an xinetd service. If you are going to start that, either use YaST and look under network services and you will inetd services. You can turn it on there, or you can edit the /etc/xinetd.d/vsftp file and comment out the line that says disable = yes. Then restart the xinetd daemon
rcxinetd restart or /etc/init.d/xinetd restart

Dont have either of those.

Perhaps just not installed. If you are using the standard "UNIX ftpd" that too is probably an xinetd service.

ncftp is a client. I wasnt even aware it was a server.
start yast, pick install software, and use the search on ftp and see for sure which ftp server software u have.

If ya have aim, yahoo, icq or whatever, we can always connect on that if'n ya want
