Setting up email from SuSe Linux 8.1

I am brand new to linux. I have just installed SuSe Linux 8.1 and now I am trying to find out how to:

1. Make my Linux server act as an SMTP server (for outgoing email only); which will

2. dial up my ISP periodically via a modem connection to transfer the emails via the internet. I have searched and searched online, but there is nothing that really has helped me figure out what I need to do.

What steps do I need to take, and are there any documents which describe the steps needed?

If any one could help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Generally, you can just install sendmail or really any other smtp package that is out there. With distros like Suse, Redhat or Mandrake, upon istallation of said smtpd server you should be able to use it immediately.

What I do, and this is extremely easy... is use Pine. It is a fine command line/menu program that is easy to run and if you decided to ssh into your server from a remoter location you can check your email without worry that you'll get a nasty M$-inspired email virus on your boss's box.

Good luck.
