Setting up an Linux domain controller at home
 

Having recently bought a new computer I decided to turn my old desktop into a Linux box and wanted to try my hand at using it as a domain controller for the house.

This is my setup: I have the Server which is running the KDR shell on OpenSuse 10.3 with an Ethernet connection to my Linksys wireless router. I also have my main rig, a Mac Pro dual boot with Leopard/Vista connected to the router via Ethernet. My cable connection is coming in through the router and I have a laptop, which is running XP, that connects to the router via wireless.

Is there a good guide out there on the setup process for using this OS as a domain controller as opposed to just a file server?

Depends on what do you mean by a domain controller? Do you mean like a NT domain controller? or like a windoze 2003 Active directory domain controller. If you just like a NT style one, I would go for sambe, an active directory style you would need samba + LDAP.

SuSE's samba-doc package contains a couple books that should help. Samba 3 by Example and Samba 3 HOWTO & Reference. They both contain model configurations that should help. Also there are the wizards in YaST2. Keep in mind that you will be using the Samba DC for authentication by the clients so they will need to be configured for this as well. I don't know if or how to do this for an apple computer.
