Setting up a Cable Internet on Linux

Hello. Right now, i'm on Windows XP of the machine with Linux on it. It's a duel boot machine, and i am wondering how can i set up internet on Linux? How can i find exactly what my modem is connected to and how can i change the settings? I have a cable modem at the moment, and it works fine with windows. Thanks for any help.

I'm using Slackware 9.1 by the way.

I don't use slackware but with RH you can select Auto-assign IP from DHCP mode.

How exactly are you connected to the internet - is your system using an external USB cable modem, or does your PC have a NIC and hook via LAN cable to your cable modem?

NIC (i'm pretty sure) and we connect the computer to a hub, then the hub is connected to the cable modem. We have 3 comps connected to the hub, and all of them work fine (course, they're not running linux). I don't know exactly how to set up the cable modem/internet on Linux.

Well, basically if you are running DHCP to get an IP address on the other systems, you can do the same thing on Linux. Are you manually assigning IP addresses, or are you using DHCP? Also, what distro of Linux are you using? It's really very easy to set up, provided your Linux distro has no problems with your NIC. Let me know the particulars above and we'll go from there.
