Setting permissions that include sub-directories

I've found quite a bit of posts regarding permissions and I'm pretty sure I have at least a basic understanding of how permissions work in Linux. Here is my question... Say I have a directory called storage_1 and in that directory are multiple files and directories and in those directories are multiple files and directories etc. Now I want to set read and execute permissions to all users and groups and write permission to only owner, and root of course. I'm using Fedora Core 4, so I can just right click on the folder "storage_1", select the "permissions" tab and set what permissions I want. So I would think. That doesn't work though. It only set those permissions for THAT object, leaving everything in that folder untouched. Just selecting each file or folder and changing the permissions wouldn't be such a problem if there wasn't 200GB of files in that directory. So, what I'm asking is this: Is there a way to set permissions that will affect ALL sub-directories and files? Kind of like the way Windoze uses inherent permissions for child objects... Any help would be greatly appreciated.
