Setting Linux up to do what i want?

Having spent two days trying to get slackware to work sucessfully with no errors on starting up, and so that all the hardware works, i now have a system the boots well, can see and use all the hardware satisfactorily, and performs basic functions of web browsing, email, and text editing.

now i want to set up the box to run as an ftp server (i would also like to get apache up and running and also an email system of some kind, but the ftp is most important for now)
having read quite a bit about proFTPd, i decided to go with that as the ftp server, so did some more research, and found a tutorial on installing it, on this very site.
however i am technically inexperienced in the use of linux, and although i followed the instructions in it as closely as i could, i got it wrong. ive since tried quite a bit to get it working, but i cant, so if anyone can suggest an ftp server that is easy to set up on slackware then can they post it, or if not can someone walk me through the setting up of proFTPd cos i cant do it.

Hey,

Never really setup ftp server but you could check out vsftpd. Both proftpd and vsftpd use simple config files so configuration may not be that hard.

Tux,

im having problems compiling the programs, ive never really done it before.

can you use the console in xfce to compile a program

what does it mean by:
bash-3.00# make
echo\#define BUILD_STAMP\"`date`\" >include/buildstamp.h
/bin/sh: include/buildstamp.h: no such file or directory
make: *** [include/buildstamp.h] Error 1

and how do i sort it out

why not??? It's console anyways.

Never really got that sort of an error...try searching google with that error and you might get a lead.
