set up a printer(linux to windows printer)

I have a printer connected to a machine running windowsxp professional. I am running Linux Slackware.

How may I set up a printer so I may print from my Linux machine?

Thanks in advance!

share the printer of course from the winbows machine
then access it through samba
for instance set up a new printer in cups with the address
smb://<user>:<passwrd>@<servername>/<printername>
edit: forgot to say use the linux driver i think windows can only share the printer raw

location is just an optional description for you and has no real effect
"the printer in the secret condo in hawaii" is my favorite

its not working for me.
I put this into "Device URL"
smb://administrator/HPDeskje
HPDeskje is the name set up on windows as the "sharing name"

When trying to print the test page I get NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL, I tried using
smb://administrator/ and I get
NT_STATUS_BAD_NETWORK_NAME when trying to print test page.

Yeah it works! Im so happy

If anyone else stumbles on this problem

When you got to the part for entering "smb://..." type
smb://anonymous@computername/printername
  • anonymous
  • Keep it like this unless you want more security than you'll need username/pasword and have it setup on your windows machine which I have tryed but don't know how to do. Until one day(today) I have tryed to put "anonymous" and said "it would be a miracle if this would work" and it worked , I was laughing because it wasn't obvious to me, and more of a joke to try.

    computername
  • Get this from on windows goto system settings, click on "Computer Name" tab and then look for "Full computer name" and use that, (Case sensitive I think). Also if you are in a different workgroup than you might need to specify the work group like smb://...@workgroup/computername... You can change your workgroup in the samba config file. On howto's it say's its in /etc/samba.conf I have it in /etc/samba/samba.config. If you change it you will need to restart your server (continue reading if your a newbe like me) cd to /etc/rc.d/ find the samba script. I have it called "rc.samba" to restart simply type
    Code:
    ./rc.samba restart
    and bingo.

    printername
  • its the share name for the printer.

and don't forget to install printing services for Unix. I don't know if that is needed but I have it installed (comes on windows CD).

Well I have done everything this seems to say but I get an error that says:
NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESFUL

does anyone have any idea what I need to do with this one?
