Server unable to boot

Hi,

i have a major issue here. I have a Redhat 4.0 AS that is unable to boot up after i resize the lv. shouldnt have done that.

when i boot up, it has these errors

cciss/c0d1: unknow partition table
mkrootdev: label /1 not found
mounting root filesystem
mount: error 2 mounting ext3
mount: error 2 mounting none
switching to new root
switchroot: mount failed: 22
umount /initrd/dev failed: 2
kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

After this..the machine stop responding.

Nothing much i can do.

I search from the internet that i might still be able to do a rescue disk to make it work. but where do i locate that? i do not have any linux cd.

Any1 pls help.
Step by step if possible.

Really appreciate. Need to make the system work by tomorrow.

hi there,

If you have resized the partitions, then that might have changed the partition table, so if the linux partition is still there, you might require to point to the correct partition in your file like fstab,grub/lilo.
To change these files, you need to access them, which can only be done by using an alternate boot device which can be
1. Rescue disk/floppy
2. Linux installed on some other partition, you need to boot using that.
3. Unplug this drive, plug into some system which has linux installed and boot this as secondary device, then mount the root partition and edit the required files.

regards

Hi,

I guess no need to unplug it. When we boot into rescue mode the total image is going to save in /mnt/sysimage. So you can edit the /etc/fstab file in rescue mode. just follow the steps
1.boot into rescue mode through CD
2.And it will ask you whether to copy the sysimage into /mnt/sysimage or not click ok
3.#chroot /mnt/sysimage
4.after executing the above cmd you can access the /etc/fstab file

I hope this will help you. Kindly suggest me if i'm wrong.

hi,

If 'cghcgh' has a CD , then he can boot in the rescue mode and continue.
But he has mentioned that he has no Linux CD to boot from..
