server keeps freezing

I keep having this weird problem: my server works just fine for 3 up to 26 hours after which it suddenly freezes.
All input devices refuse, even the power-button so I have to unplug the powercable.

Server runs RedHat linux 8.0 but when installed with Mandrake 9.2 the error re-occurs.

Is this a hardware problem then? If so, where should I look first?

Thanks a lot!!

Are you saying that while running RH8.0 this trouble does not occur...or that it occurs with both?

Could be bad RAM. Check out http://www.memtest86.com/
Your best bet (easiest) may be to just dnld the iso and create a boot cd.

cheers;)

No it occurs with both distro's. The computer once ran under windows and had the same problem.

However the person using it before, claims to have had a solution for the problem when it was using M$. He says that by installing distributed.net and running it when the pc was in use, the problem did not occur.

Is that even possible or should I call it coincidence?

very interesting.
I assume running distributed.net would not allow the system resources (cpu/mem/mhd) to ever get below a certain utilization level and thus the machine would never truly be 'idle'

Makes me wonder about power mgmt features and sleep/'hibernate' features. Since your issue is not OS-dependant... if this is the cause of your problems it would probably be in the bios settings. What I am trying to say is the pwr-mgmt features in your bios could be sensing the idle activity and thus taking steps (such as sleep mode... power down hard drive, cycle-down cpu ...etc) ... which causes your machine to freeze such that you cannot recover it.
distributed.net maybe just never let the machine go to sleep.

..of course this is only a possibility if the machine hangs while unattended rather that in use. Other wise try memtest , and then start removing components one at a time

cheers!

Ok so the plot thickens...

Yesterday I went complaining to the tech guys at university and they were as kind as to give me a new machine. Pentium celeron 1.2 gHz wich is twice the previous speed, so I was incredibly glad.

I install the new system and start ftp-ing the files that need to be hosted. BLAM: it freezes during the transfer.
And guess what? Same problem. PC works for some time then gives out.

Wich would lead me to three conclusions:
1. I suck at installing a server and keep making the same horrible mistake without knowing it
2. The system software (mandrak 9.2; my RedHat cd's were at home so I had to) is out dated and I should installing Fedora core 2 or something like that
3. There is something amiss with the location were the server is beinig kept. It can't be a power problem, could it possibly be that there is a problem with the IP I'm using?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

You'll need to try to attach a keyboard/monitor to the machine and check if there is a kernel panic or something. It's possible that the machine is overheating and getting shut off by the BIOS, but running distributed.net would make it hotter, not cooler. The distributed things is maybe a coincidence -- interesting though. You could always run the Linux distributed.net client and see what happens :).
