Angry Server connection dies after 20 minutes

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
I'm running PCLinuxOS, my browser is Firefox and my email program is Thunderbird. My ISP is Time Warner cable. After about 20 minutes, my connection with the server always dies, and I might as well wait until the next day to try again. Anyone know of this and have a fix?

Do you have a router connecting your computer to the Internet, or do you connect to the Internet directly? If you have a router, can you ping it or surf to its administration site? (Usually something like 192.168.0.1) Have you tried disconnecting and reconnecting? You can do this with the command "ifconfig" in the terminal, as in "ifconfig eth0 up" and "ifconfig eth0 down" (as root). PCLinuxOS may also have some kind of GUI for reconnecting.

Server connection dies after 20 minutes

I'm connected directly to my cable provider. (And when I bring my Mac home from work and connect up, it stays online indefinitely!) So it is either the linux or the browser (although the same thing happens with email as with the browser).

I have tried unplugging the modem, and if I leave it unplugged long enough it sometimes works when I reconnect. But it is very inconvenient,

gruss,

Chris
