Serial ATA / AHCI
 

Hello,

Hopefully I won't make you guys feel too dirty trying to help me get windows to load (shock!) but please keep reading!

I love linux, each day I'm finding it better than windows in almost every area! Though I am very new to it and still sometimes need windows because the learning curve with linux is so huge that I have to resort to windows to get things done (though this is slowly changing.) I was wondering if someone can help me make my system run a little smoother. I have a dell XPS gen 3 with one HD. Originally the system came with windows xp prof installed. To install linux (suse prof 9.2) I had to change the HD settings in the bios from AHCI to ATA because otherwise linux would not recognise the drive. But everytime I want to load windows I have to enter the bios and change back to AHCI or else windows does not recognise the drive. Is there a way to get either linux to recognise AHCI or windows to load Serial ATA? I'm a complete noob and not even sure what the difference is between AHCI and ATA (something about raid??) Any help or pointers in the right direction would be great!

I think I may be having trouble with something similar, I went to the library and picked up the red hat bible and read through the instructions, however it version 7.2 of red hat and the book has no mention about Sata hard disks, I had problems installing windows when I first got the thing until I figured out about the 3rd party drivers etc, so today when i tryed to install redhat right up to the part of partitioning was fine, but then it couldn't find anywhere to store files etc. Anyway advice is appreciated, in the meantime I'll mess around with the Bios
