If you're familiar with sendmail on AIX, you're all set. It functions the same way under Linux.

Yes, you can edit a file with VI in Linux, same as you can on any other version of unix/linux. And there are many sendmail tutorials on how to set up authentication, but since you don't say what KIND of authentication, we can't help you. Check Google for specific instructions, or use the same sendmail.cf lines that you did in AIX.

And on a related note, since you're familiar with sendmail on AIX...you should already know that you shouldn't edit the .cf file, but the MC file, and use the preprocessor to generate a new CF.

thank you - the actual problem is that I can email to anyone outside of the network but not to anyone on the network and someone mentioned that it might be a outgoing auth setting in sendmail?

and on the linux box why can't I just vi edit the sendmail.cf file?

Thank you

"Ouside the network" and "on the network" is very vague. What do you mean? Do you mean you can send mail to external DOMAINS, but not internally to your domain, or internally to users on the Linux box?

As I said...you CAN. Again, sendmail on Linux is no different than sendmail on AIX. Editing the .cf file is not a best-practice on any platform. You should always edit the .mc file, and run it through the preprocessor to generate a new .cf. That's been fairly standard for years.

Thank you for your reply - exactly what I meant that I can send to outside domains but not internally to my domain or internal users on my domain

Thank You
