Sendmail
 

I have a question about sendmail. I'm very new to linux and i know very little but i would like to use this commnad. I have Fedora Core 9 and so i have installed on the computer. But how do i launch it? And when i do how do i send a e-mail. I've googled it to death but all i see is how to configure it. Any help would be great.

sendmail isn't "a command" it's the most prolific SMTP MTA in the world ever. (i think). whilst there is a command called "sendmail" it's much much more than that. What do you actually want to do with it? Generally sendmail will sit in the background of your system and when applicable apps want to send an email they pass the mail to the local sendmail services and off it goes according to however it does it. This is basically as opposed to telling your mail client, outlook, thunderbird etc... what your SMTP server is, e.g. mail.blah.thingy.com in the preferences box. it's a system wide way to get shot of mail when used in a clients perspective. from a servers perspective it's a very different animal which is generally horrible to configure and a nightmare to *really* understand, so most people replace it with a nicer server like exim or postfix.

I mean simply i just want to start it and send a e-mail.

as i said, it sits in the background waiting for connections to it, you wouldn't start it. if you do something like "echo test | mail bob@example.com" then that'll hook into sendmail or equivalent and should send and email to bob.
