Sending faxes in opensuse & modem question

Hi all,

Let me introduce myself first, my name is Martin and I live in Uruguay. A couple of weeks ago my father asked me to build him a PC for his work. He has a small company and will use the computer mainly to send faxes and store documents, knowing this I immediately thought of using Linux as the OS. Now, having no previous experience with Linux, I decided to install OpenSuse in my home PC (a friend of mine recommended it to me) to become familiar with it. And so far, I have to say I like it. However, I've a few questions I was hoping someone would answer:

1) Is there any software out there that can be used for this? And if so, is it free?

2) Do I need a modem, a fax or both?

3) Will I need an Internet connection? And if so, will using the modem be enough?

Thank you all,
Cheers.

1. Yes, Hylafax is the most common one for Linux, and works well. If you don't already have it installed, you can easily get it for whatever distro you're using.

2. You need a fax modem to send faxes, period. An external one (either USB or serial), is easier to configure, IMHO, since it's just a serial port, rather than having to deal with any potential problems with a PCI device.

3. You can use a fax/modem to dial out to the internet, but when you're faxing, your internet is down. When you're on the internet, your faxing is down. I'd suggest a network card for Internet access, via broadband (if available). Otherwise, get a second modem just for internet access.

Any graphic programs for sending faxes?

It seems that Hylafax works only on the command line and has a somewhat awkward interface. Is there a graphic program for sending faxes, or some graphic interface to Hylafax?

Possibly...why don't you start your own question thread and ask, rather than hijacking someone elses?

Thread protocol

I thought that by adding to an existing thread, I would make searching easier and avoid unnecessary proliferation of threads. If I violated any netiquette, my apologies.
