just a quick note to you @malekmustaq

Code:
Verifying package libimobiledevice-1.2.1-x86_64-1.txz.
Installing package libimobiledevice-1.2.1-x86_64-1.txz:
PACKAGE DESCRIPTION:
# libimobiledevice (iOS device communication library)
#
# A library to communicate with services of Apple iOS devices using native
# protocols.
#
# The libimobiledevice homepage: http://www.libimobiledevice.org/
#
Executing install script for libimobiledevice-1.2.1-x86_64-1.txz.
Package libimobiledevice-1.2.1-x86_64-1.txz installed.

Package libimobiledevice-1.2.0-x86_64-2 upgraded with new package /tmp/libimobiledevice-1.2.1-x86_64-1.txz.
now it is working perfectly in Slackware again. so maybe you need to change your distro hehe.

OK, Deal:

I've downloaded the x64/AMD Cinamon iso void Linux

I've got 2 slots open in the research box so as soon as i can get a new disc from newEgg we'll get this critter installed

it will be most interesting to see what you guys are up to. maybe it's a better option v. LMDE. LMDE seems to be a bit of a straggler when it comes to updates

if you get it installed PM me and I will send you their forum address for anything you might want to ask about concerning Void Linux.

Me I'd just install a Distro that is know to work with iPhone already, not trying to push Void Linux but it work and is easy to work with. It is a rolling release so it gets updated often.

OK

I downloaded the void Linux .iso for the AMD64/Cinnamon version.
but: Cinnamon crashes during the install.

is it possible this is due to using a 2560x1440 monitor? I have a 1080 alternate

I'm more than willing to help you as I am an Apple aficionado plus love UNIX/Linux. But I have no idea what exactly you want to do, can you please clearly explain it in English?

not A clue as I am assuming you know what you are doing in creating an bootable usb stick for install off a iso.
their forum
https://forum.voidlinux.eu/

Code:
dd if=iso-source of=destanation && sync
as root of course.

I think I'll try again just using the plain version of void/Linux (sans Cinnamon ). I'm suspecting the installer may not support using the 1440 line monitor via Display Port...... once installed it's likely to be OK

we'll see; i might get to it tw

the object is simple: we want to tether a iPhone 6s to a Linux LMDE/2 box -- and upload the photos using their file manager ("Nemo") -- ( or the photo library package "Shotwell" )

the process apparently requires libimobiledevice6 where libimobiledevice4 is installed. libimobiledevice6 is available from the Debian site but has a co-requisite of libgcrypt 1.7 or better--- which apparently is available only in source mode. their download includes an install script that appears to be comprehensive HOWEVER: this is messing with GPG and as you probably know GPG is REQUIRED for the software maintenance system in Linux. so-- I'd need to test this on a throw-away system. I was about ready to do that when I decided to play with void Linux for a day

Question: do you know of any dedicated devices capable of unloading photos off of iPhones an putting them on SD chips or Thumb drives ? that might be the easy way

? My notes which are Debian based in case it helps. I sold my Iphone 5S and went with Samusung S7 Edge since it is more linux friendly.

that is the .iso that i used. I usually use a program called "Brasero" to burn a CD. In this case the .iso is 585.1 MB -- easy fit on a CD -- no need to use use a stick for this

two possible variables here: (1) the 1440 lines monitor and (2) the Display port interface.

the .iso booted and started to load normally but then when all the little blue triangles appeared -- i took this as the "background" -- it reported "cinnamon crashed". it offered to continue in "fall back mode" but this did not succeed .

a bit later on i'll hookup the 1080 monitor -- which runs only on RGB port

the disc that did have straight Debian on it -- I erased that, removing the partitioning. that straight Debian system insisted on resetting the boot priorities in my A88X-PRO MoBo and that [expletive deleted] me off.

I trust void Linux is going to be well behaved in the my research box -- where there are between 3 and 5 system disks at various times -- i.e. do not mount the other partitions until told to do so.

thanks

at this point it seems the best way to get photos off an iPhone is to use some type of attachment that accommodates an SD chip. looks like Amazon sells one. unfortunately each seems to require an app to be installed in the iPhone aapl don't like that.

for now we can just use the old Win7 system; hopefully i'll have a Linux solution in the next few days.

it has also occurred to me that another device -- an 8" iPad perhaps -- might serve as an intermediary -- load photos to the iPad and then load them onto an SD chip. I don't know if any iPads work that way -- but -- being an aapl enthusiast perhaps you might know--

I considered that option, as well as Dropbox. However: there were 4,000 .jpeg to be transferred..... a lot of time to upload and then download that many images to the "Cloud" .The solution I want is for her to just hook up the Tether and then use the Import from Camera option in SHOTWELL.

I think I made an error yesterday: I tried the CD again and noticed it was loading the musl version -- whatever that is......
so, i downloaded
Code:
void-live-x86_64-20170220-cinnamon.iso
( and checked the SHA256SUM -- like I should have done, yesterday )

and burned a new CD. I also switched to the 1080 RGB monitor--- basics, y'know

after that the image loaded and showed a Cinnamon Desktop. I was able to connect the WiFi, however: no "INSTALL" option appears

where do y'all have that hidden ? the target disk is UNFORMATED: No partition table.

one of the issues i'm facing is the person i'm trying to help is an ON|OFF person. She'll turn her phone on and plug in a cable but beyond that -- she just quits. with that in mind I'm not sure where this will end.
