send emails

hi guys

I need to send emails to some accounts

1. I need sendmail up and running right?
2. I need my local sendmail to use an existing SMTP server to send emails (10.x.x.x)? in that case what I need to configure to send emails?
since using mail myaccount@companyame.com is not sending emails to that address

thanks a lot

it is not sending emails?
what is it doing??
logs??
error messages??
????
????

is sendmail running???

do not know your distro so guessing around in the dark.

service sendmail status
service sendmail start

post some sort of messages here - error or logs.....
sendmail can actually relay mail from the local host. it is not a necessity to pass that mail onto a relay server first

send a mail from the command line in verbose mode...

mail -v user@domain

1. yeah it is running

Code:
sendmail (pid 5571 3820) is running...
2. it is red hat 5.0

3. which log should I check?

4. basically these servers are standalone servers I am testing one
they don't use DNS (nothing en resolv.conf or I need something there)
I just have a record on my hosts file pointing the SMTP server

5. in verbose mode

Code:
WARNING: local host name (myservername) is not qualified; see cf/README: WHO AM I?
gmail.com: Name server timeout
karlo@gmail.com... Transient parse error -- message queued for future delivery
karlo@gmail.com... queued

i still dont get you.
so you are pointing your mail out to an smtp server right??
you cant justpoint to the smtp server in your hosts file...send mail must point there too....

can you show me where you have done that?>?
should look something like this

define(`SMART_HOST', `smtp.your.provider')dnl

in your /etc/mail/sendmail.mc

after that, restart sendmail to rebuild the db hash or make -C /etc/mail

no

my current configuration is

1. I added SMTP server to my host file. DONE
2. I started sendmail. DONE
3. I tried sending an email. Not working

mail emailaccount
mail -v emailaccount

those were my basic steps

according to your previous message I have to configure something on sendmail configuration files...?

thanks

let me summarize my issue again since I was not clear

my customer has multiple server but they do not use DNS so there is nothing on resolv.conf

but they opened some communication to a server that is a SMTP server now my questions is these are red hat server 5.0 and I need to send emails. Sendmail is up and running but it fails
with

Code:
WARNING: local host name (SRVAMD01) is not qualified; see cf/README: WHO AM I?
lghgbm.net: Name server timeout
l.chacon@lghgbm.net... Transient parse error -- message queued for future delivery
cchacon@gbm.net... queued
You have new mail in /var/spool/mail/root
any idea hot send emails o what I need to change add to my sendmail configuration?

From

masimiqbal @ URL http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...emails-789552/

Thanks GOD, I solved this problem myself. Basically my mailserver require "outgoing server (SMTP) require authentication".

The steps I take:

1. Add these lines in /etc/mail/sendmail.mc

define(`SMART_HOST’, `smtp.mydomain.com’)
FEATURE(`authinfo’,`hash /etc/mail/authinfo.db’)

2. Make new file in /etc/mail “authinfo” with nano /etc/mail/authinfo and write only this line.

AuthInfo:smtp.mydomain.com “U:user” “I:root@mydomain.com” “P:12345” “M:LOGIN PLAIN”

3. Run this command on terminal

makemap hash /etc/mail/authinfo < /etc/mail/authinfo

4. Run this command on terminal.

m4 sendmail.mc > sendmail.cf

5. Finally restart sendmail service.

/etc/init.d/sendmail restart

6. Check your logs with this command

tail -f /var/log/maillog.

Is this useful?

Your domain name (sender machine) must be qualified.

see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fully_q...ed_domain_name

Im still confused about your problem.
Are you saying server A is a mail server and wants to relay mail via server B??
If you are, my previous post applies.

First, please give the server a proper FQDN.
Then test again and send back any errors...

Actually im talking s**t....
DNS must be used....
Because when sending an email, a lookup on the domain name part will be carried out...regardless of if you are using smarthosts or not.
If you do not have a dns server to use, use a generic publicly available one....although this may be slower and less secure...
