Question Segmentation problem with chown


hi, when i tried to change the ownership of a directory i am getting a message "Segmentation fault".
#chown web:web directory
Segmentation fault
or
#chown -R web:web directory
Segmentation fault
previously the ownerships are web.web, but it was changed to bak.bak, how it happned i am not understanding. the directory contains few .png and .html files.Even their ownerships are web.web. Can any body solve my problem plz....

Segmentation faults mean the application is trying to access a part of memory it has no rights to. This shouldn't happen so you best find out at what time the machine started exhibiting this behaviour, review what packages got updated or changed around that time and verify your installed packages. If this is happening on a machine that has not been maintained properly (updates) in a while I'd suggest reviewing access logs and login records as well.
