Segmentation faults and hangs in some distros when using iwconfig

I try to set up wireless network in DSL or Puppy or some other distros, but first when I say "iwconfig ath0 channel 6" a segmentation fault occurs, when I try again, iwconfig hangs. Why is it?
I go to another tty by pressing Alt+F2 and try to kill -9 iwconfig process, it doesn't say anything, but the process is still visible through ps -A. How to kill the process in such situation?

With AntiX distro everything works ok.

P.S.: my wlan adapter is DWL-G520, when using DWL-520+ the same occurs.

kill works by process number, so yo would first have to issue "ps -e" to find the process number. to kill by name , you need killall
