Segmentation Fault headache - strace available

I am having a headache on how to tackle this segmentation fault error.

System:
Linux xxx.yyy.com 2.4.36.4 #3 SMP Tue Jun 23 18:40:57 EST 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 3 (Taroon Update 5)

Don't ask why it's still 2.4 or RHEL3, please. However, the system is updated till this second using yum -y update.

Not outside the scope of a generic system update, no. Updating
glibc by itself will most likely render your system completely unusable ...
