security bypass

I'm trying to install firefox 1.0.6 and I get a safety message saying it will not instal an exe file, what do I do?

michaelk 08-22-2005 12:49 PM

Go get the linux version:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/all.html

exe files are windows executables and will not natively run in linux. BTW what linux distribution are you running. There may be a package already built for your distro.

I downloaded firefox from that site onto a cd.(e.g. firefox 1.0.6. install.tar.gz) I'm using the Mandrake dist. and I can't get fire fox or Opera to install no matter what. Needless to say I'm new to linux. Thanks. P.

Add source http://urpmi.org/ after you are done following the dirs, then as root type: urpmi mozilla-firefox

Another site to look at is http://rpm.pbone.net/ just look for your version of mandrake. They prob have firefox there as well for you to use.

Thanks,I'll give it a go although it looks rather technical for a newbie but I have to get rid of this damn Windows B***S***. Incidently, the message I get is " The file tar:/ firefox.1.0.6.installer.tar.gz is an executable program. For safety it will not be started"

michaelk 08-23-2005 10:15 AM

A tar.gz is similar to a windows zip file and is not executable. Usually a tar.gz file contains the application's source code. Once the files are extracted (unzipped), one needs to compile and then install the application executable, configuration files etc. etc to the desired directories.

Ok,now I'm making some headway, however, typing in umpmi.org etc. said "no file or directory" so I downloaded firefox from pbone and it installed ok but when I go to open it it won't open like it's looking for something. There were three versions of firefox for Mandrake 10 maybe I dl the wrong one i.e foxfire 1.0.2.1mcni.i586.rpm.Thanks, P.

Ok try here

Sorry but it still says "No such file or directory" but I really appreciate your help. Incidently, I dloaded Opera from pbone and it installed and ran ok, so what is it with firefox?

bosewicht 08-23-2005 01:41 PM

i just clicked the link and am sitting here looking at the page, how can you say it throws a 404 error??
http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/

fid def 08-23-2005 01:52 PM

I get a message that says Network Problem, but I have a connection because I'm dloading some stuff with no probs. as we speak. P.
I tried again and got it but it's way beyond my capabilities, sorry.

bosewicht 08-23-2005 01:55 PM

regardless, what error do you get when you type mozilla-firefox in a terminal?

fid def 08-23-2005 02:42 PM

command not found.

bosewicht 08-23-2005 03:01 PM

ok, that should be easy enough. do a whereis mozilla-firefox. I'm not sure where it installs in mandrake, but prob /usr/bin. so you could try running /usr/bin/mozilla-firefox that should launch it.

fid def 08-24-2005 08:32 AM

Eureka! I've found it and it's up and running. Thanks to all, bosewich in particular, and I have one last question: is there keystroke in Terminal that is equal to F3 in DOS?
