Angry Second disk drive ownership issues

I have a Dell Poweredge 1800 that I took out of service as a Windows server and am converting to a Linux file server. There are two disk drives. No problems with using Samba on the drive where O/S is installed. After multiple installs, second drive still can't be modified to change owner or access permission. I keep getting a message that owner does not exist and a system error. Any suggestions? I can access the base drive from Windows clients with no problems.

Which Linux? What's on the second drive? Just data? Filesystem type? Getting access to the second drive from the installed Linux? or over a LAN?

It is Ubuntu desktop 14.04-- I know it is a server but I have hated command line interfaces since the original version of DOS
The drive is currently NTFS and only has data on it.
There are no problems accessing it from the computer where it is installed.
Can't access it from a Windows computer as a samba share.
Can't change ownership locally either
